Sex — we all enjoy it in one way or another.

But what if during the critical moment when you need it most, you can’t support the action?

Believe it or not, this phenomenon is quite common. However, that doesn’t make it any less worrying.

When you cannot achieve or maintain an erection during sex, such a phenomenon is often associated with erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction is a widespread condition characterized by a persistent inability to maintain or have an erection.

It is a medical condition that can destroy one’s self-confidence and mental health. It can also indicate underlying health issues that should be addressed by a local men’s clinic.

This article will delve into the mechanism behind an erection and the possible reasons why you may be suffering from erectile dysfunction. It will also show you ways to boost your sex life naturally.

Let’s start.

The biological phenomenon behind erections

As humorous as erections may be, the science behind erections is nothing short of fascinating.

It first begins when a man perceives a source of sexual arousal, be it a person, sex media, or a fantasy. When this sexual stimulus enters the man’s mind, whether through sight or thought, the brain signals the body and the penis that it is aroused.

These signals then open the blood vessels and cause the erectile tissue to pump more blood. This blood remains in the erectile chambers and gets trapped, causing the penis to contract and form an erection.

Once the man is sexually satisfied (or when he is no longer aroused), the blood will flow out of the penis and return to its relaxed state.

In healthy adult men, the events illustrated above indicate a normal and healthy functioning of the penile erection cycle. However, many factors can prevent this, causing failure to initiate an erection despite sexual stimulation.

Why do I lose my erection in the middle of intercourse?

Erectile dysfunction during intercourse is not a simple black and white affair. it is a multi-faceted subject that can be attributed to various physiological, psychological and environmental factors. It can also come as a result of chronic health conditions.

Therefore, it is important to know its various causes. This way, you can have a more complete understanding of this sexual dysfunction and consequently get the right ED treatment to improve your sexual health forever.

With that said, here are some possible reasons why you may experience ED even when you are sexually aroused.

1. Physiological causes

As you age, you become more prone to cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, atherosclerosis and heart disease. Neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis can also cause long-term erectile dysfunction.

These conditions can negatively affect your sexual performance and can cause a restriction of blood flow to the penis. This, in turn, makes it harder for men to achieve erections suitable for sex.

2. Psychological Issues

In some cases, the cause of your erectile problems could be psychological in nature. In a studypeople with depressive symptoms are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction than mentally healthy people.

In addition, people who experience performance anxiety—or a type of anxiety that causes one to fail to perform a task (eg, have difficulty having sex)—may also suffer from maintaining an erection suitable for sexual activity.

People who experience relationship-related mental health problems, even without an underlying health condition, are also likely to have difficulty mustering enough sexual desire to want to have sex.

3. Poor lifestyle choices

normal psychological hormones lifestyle drugs

Bad habits and choices can gradually erode one’s ability to maintain a satisfactory erection.

For example, people who take illegal drugs and drink alcohol excessively are more prone to erectile dysfunction, as well as a number of other health problems.

People who don’t get enough sleep and eat an unhealthy diet are also prone to decreased sexual excitement.

4. Hormonal imbalance

If you are unable to maintain an erection but are otherwise free of any medical conditions, this may be due to underlying hormonal imbalances.

Some men with low testosterone levels are at increased risk of developing low libido and low testosterone-related erectile dysfunction.

Many cases of low testosterone are asymptomatic, so it is best to consult a doctor so that he can evaluate your health through verified medical tests.

Additionally, an imbalance in hormones can indicate thyroid disorders, which would need medical attention.

5. Medicines

Some medications come with unwanted side effects, such as erectile dysfunction. Therefore, it is important to note any developments of erectile problems after ingesting these drugs:

If you are taking any of these prescription drugs and have sexual health problems, discuss your concerns with a doctor.

How to maintain optimal erectile health

Sexual health is an integral part of overall well-being. IIf you want to keep it in top shape, you should consider implementing positive lifestyle habits and medical treatments to achieve a long-lasting erection.

Here are some good treatments and lifestyle changes to consider to improve your erections.

  • Avoid eating too much bad food: Avoid overeating and consider exploring a Mediterranean diet. Choose to eat healthy foods that are low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.
  • Get the right treatments: If you suffer from mental health conditions, consider talking to a mental health professional. DM patients can also consider DM therapy and RestoreWave therapy to manage their condition.
  • Take care of your underlying condition: If you have an underlying condition that is causing your erectile dysfunction, then consider taking this treatment along with your ED symptoms.
  • Talk to a doctor: Booking an appointment can help you receive customized treatment suitable for your condition.
