The cancellation of the Trump administration of $ 766 million in contracts for the development of MRNA vaccines against potential pandemic viruses is the last blow to national defense, former health officials said. They warned that the US could be at the mercy of other countries in the next pandemic.

“The actions of the administration extend to prevent us from biological threats,” said Beth Cameron, a senior adviser to Brown University Pandemic Center and former director of the White House National Security Council. “The cancellation of this investment is a message that we are changing our attitude to the readiness pandemic,” he added, “and this is not good for the American people.”

Influenza pandemics killed up to 103 million people worldwide last century, researchers estimate.

Waiting for the next big one, the US government began to reinforce the pandemic defenses of the nation’s flu during the administration of George W. Bush. These strategies were designed by the Security Council and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority in the Ministry of Health and Human Services, including organizations. The designs are based on vaccines that are rapidly circulating in a pandemic. Moving quickly depends on the production of vaccines in the domestic market, ensuring their safety and taking them into weapons throughout the nation through the Public Health System.

Trump’s administration undermines each of these steps, as it intensifies health agencies, reduces research and health budgets, and embarrassment issues political changes, health safety experts said.

Since President Donald Trump assumed duties, at least half of the Security Council staff has been fired or left and Barda’s future is dark. The nation’s leading adviser to the nation, Peter Marks, resigned under pressure in March, saying “the unprecedented attack on scientific truth”.

More recently, Trump’s chawback to MRNA vaccine has put Americans in the Shakier Ground in the next pandemic. “When the blows of the need and we are not ready, no other country will come to our disposal and we will suffer very much,” said Rick Bright, an immunologist and former Barda director.

The countries that produced their own vaccines in the Covid -9 pandemic had first dibs in the shots. While the United States, which hosts Moderna and Pfizer, put the second doses of MRNA vaccines in 2021, hundreds of thousands of people in countries who do not build vaccines died waiting for them.

The most relevant pandemic threat today is the H5N1 bird influenza virus. Researchers around the world are worried when it began to spread among the cattle in the US last year. Cows are closer to people biologically than birds, indicating that the virus had evolved to thrive into cells like ours.

As hundreds of herds and dozens of people were infected in the US, Biden’s administration funded Moderna to develop bird flu vaccines using MRNA technology. Under the agreement, the US government stipulates that it could buy installments before a pandemic. That he no longer stands.

Researchers can make bird flu vaccines in other ways, but mRNA vaccines grow much faster because they are not based on subtle biological processes, such as developing vaccines in chicken eggs or cells that are kept live in laboratory tanks.

Time is important because influenza viruses are constantly mutating and vaccines work better when matching any variants.

The development of vaccines in eggs or cells can last 10 months after the genetic sequence of a variant is known, Bright said. And egg -based is an additional risk when it comes to bird flu, because a pandemic could eliminate billions of chickens, crushing egg supplies.

The decades-old methods based on inactivated influenza viruses are more dangerous for researchers and time consuming. The Trump administration also invested $ 500 million in this approach, which was largely abandoned since the 1980s after provoking seizures in children.

“This politicized reflux is enigmatic,” Bright said.

A bird flu pandemic can start quietly in the US if the virus evolves to spread among people, but no one is tested at first. Indeed, the Disease Control Centers and Prevention Program indicate that only 10 farmers have been tested for bird flu since March. Due to their close contact with cattle and poultry, farmers’ workers are at the highest risk of infection.

As with many diseases, only a fraction of people with bird flu becomes seriously ill. Thus, the first sign that the virus is widespread can be an increase in hospital cases.

“We should have vaccines immediately,” said Angela Rasmussen, a Iologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

The US government could increase the production of existing influenza vaccines developed in eggs or cells. However, these vaccines are aimed at an older H5N1 strain and their effectiveness against the virus now circulated is unknown.

In addition to the months needed to develop an up -to -date version of eggs or cells, Rasmussen has questioned the government’s ability to try quickly and be informed with a license, with a quarter of HHS staff. If the Senate approves Trump’s proposed budget, the Agency faces about $ 32 billion in cuts.

In addition, Trump administration cuts in biomedical research and its impulse to reduce the subsidy money for general expenses could undermine academic hospitals, making them incompetent to conduct large clinical trials. And his cuts to CDC and Public Health Funds in States mean that fewer health officials will be available in the event of an emergency.

“You can’t just turn on this rear,” Rasmussen said. “The more needed to respond, the more people die.”

Researchers suggest that other countries will first produce bird flu vaccines. “The US may be at the end of the shooting as India was, where everyone – wealthy people, too – also got vaccines late,” said Achal Prabhala, a public health researcher in India at Medicines Access Group Accessibsa.

It stands on the Board of Directors of a World Health Organization Initiative to improve access to MRNA vaccines in the next pandemic. A member of the initiative, Sinergium Biotech in Argentina, is testing a MRNA vaccine against bird flu. If it works, the sinergium will share intellectual property behind the vaccine with about twelve other groups in the program from medium -income countries so they can produce it.

The Coalition for the Epidemic and Innovation of readiness, an international partnership in Norway based, provides funds to research groups that develop high -reaction vaccine technology, including MRNA, South Korea, Singapore and France. And CEPI has committed up to $ 20 million in efforts to prepare for a bird flu pandemic. This year, the Indian government has issued a request for grant applications for the development of MRNA vaccines for bird flu, warning that it “poses a serious risk to public health”.

Pharmaceutical companies also invest in mRNA vaccines for bird flu. However, Prabhala reports that private capital is not sufficient to carry early stages through clinical trials and large -scale construction. This is due to the fact that there is no purchase for bird flu vaccines until a pandemic is hit.

Limited supplies means that the United States should wait on the line for mRNA vaccines abroad. States and cities can compete with each other for agreements with external governments and companies, as well as for medical equipment at the top of the Covid pandemic.

“I’m afraid we’ll see again the kind of hunger games we saw in 2020,” Cameron said.

In an email answer to questions, Communications Manager HHS Andrew Nixon said: “We came to the conclusion that continuing investments in Moderna’s MRNA vaccine were not scientifically or morally justified.” He added: “The decision reflects broader concerns about the use of MRNA platforms in particular in the light of the placement of undesirable actions associated with MRNA COVID-19 vaccines.

Nixon did not support the claim by citing analyzes published in scientific journals.

In pile Published studies, researchers have found that MRNA vaccines against Covid are safe. For example, a placebo -controlled test testing more than 30,000 people in the US found that the adverse effects of Moderna’s vaccine were rare and transient, while 30 participants in the placebo group suffered severe Covid cases and one died.

More recently, one study revealed that three of the approximately 20,000 Moderna vaccines and souvenirs had significant adverse effects on the vaccine, which were resolved within a few months. Covid, on the other hand, killed four people during the study.

Concerning concerns about heart issue, myocarditis, a study From 2.5 million people who received at least one dose of Pfizer MRNA vaccine revealed about 2 cases per 100,000 people. Covid causes 10 to 105 cases of myocarditis per 100,000.

Nevertheless, HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who founded an anti-vaccine organization, has called false covid shots “the most deadly vaccine ever”. And without providing information, he said the 1918 flu pandemic “came from vaccine research”.

Politicalized disbelief in vaccines has been developed. Many more Republicans said they trust Kennedy to provide reliable vaccines from the local health department or the CDC in a recent KFF poll: 73% versus about half.

If bird flu becomes a pandemic in the coming years, Rasmussen said: “We will screw in multiple levels.”
