Let’s start 2024 with health and happiness!

As the holiday season approaches, the temptation for delectable treats and hearty feasts can pose a challenge to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As a certified holistic nutrition consultant and health coach, I understand the importance of balance and wellness during the holidays. Today I’m going to share some valuable tips and tricks to help you navigate the holiday season by prioritizing your gut health, keeping inflammation at bay, and not putting on extra weight!

Most of us will either have to host a dinner party or be hosted. Sometimes this gives us all control and sometimes it can feel like we have no control. Let me list some tips and tricks that can be useful in any situation.

  1. Careful nutrition for happy holidays: The holiday season often revolves around delicious meals and festive treats. If you can embrace mindful eating by savoring every bite, paying attention to hunger and fullness cues, and savoring the flavors of the season, you’ll be aware of how much you’re eating. Listen to your body and try to avoid grazing! By staying present during celebrations and meals, you can prevent overeating and cultivate a positive relationship with food.

  2. Strategic Meal Planning: This is one of my favorite tips! Plan your holiday meals strategically to include a balance of nutritious foods. If you know you’re going to a veggie-hating household, don’t be afraid to show up with a salad or vegetable dish to contribute to the meal. Incorporate colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains into your meals. This not only ensures that you are getting essential nutrients, but also helps control your overall calorie intake.

  3. Hydration for optimal well-being: Amid the holiday cheer, don’t forget the importance of staying hydrated. Proper hydration not only supports digestion, boosts energy levels and helps maintain a clear mind, but it will also help slow down alcohol intake with all the toasts we’ll be giving! Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily and consider herbal teas or infused water as festive alternatives.

  4. Healthy swaps for holiday treats: Modify traditional holiday recipes by incorporating healthier alternatives. For example, use whole wheat flour in baking, replace sugar with natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup, and choose healthy cooking oils. These swaps can make a big difference in the nutritional content of your holiday treats.

  5. Prioritize physical activity: Here in Calgary, my family will be out in the mountains skiing this holiday season! We want to maintain an active lifestyle during the holidays to compensate for the festive indulgences. Schedule regular exercise sessions, whether it’s a brisk walk, an at-home workout or a yoga session (which can help with seasonal stress, too!). Encourage your friends and family to join you, making physical activity a shared experience.

  6. Mind-body connection through relaxation techniques: The holidays can be stressful, affecting both mental and physical health. Incorporate relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation or gentle yoga to manage stress. Prioritizing self-care contributes to overall well-being.

  7. Quality sleep for rejuvenation: Make sure you get enough and quality sleep during the holiday season. Hopefully you’ll have some extra time. I give you permission to give yourself a few extra minutes in bed. Let yourself wake up for a few days! Lack of sleep can negatively affect your immune system, mood and energy levels. Establish a bedtime routine, create a calm sleep environment, and aim for 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

  8. Supportive supplements: Consider supplementing your diet with vitamins and minerals that may be lacking during the holiday season. Consult a health care professional to determine if supplements such as vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, or probiotics are right for you. We can help you evaluate your supplements at No Shoes Nutrition, so reach out anytime if you’re curious!

By adopting these holistic approaches, you can enjoy the joys of the holiday season while prioritizing your health and well-being. Remember, it’s all about balance and making conscious choices that align with your health goals. I wish you happy and healthy holidays!
