What role does the Holy Spirit play in the life of a Christian?
Years ago, I watched a Christian female refuge in a beautiful resort in Muskokas. The weekend event focused on the discovery of God’s caller in our lives. I went away refreshed and rejuvenated in my walk with God.
However, one thing stood out as weird and – as a young Christian – was scared. As the group sang and worships God, I noticed that a woman stayed in the back of the room. It looked like it had a permanent crisis. Some other women stood around her to protect her from self -injury. She shook violently with movements of her hands and legs. She shouted, put her eyes on and talked about fur. I turned to the woman next to me and asked what was going on. He said, “Oh, it’s just full of the Holy Spirit.”
Really; I knew I was relatively young in terms such as “born again” and “in a fire for Christ”, but I did not believe that the Holy Spirit full meant to lose control of one’s body.
Jesus promised the disciples that they would be filled with the Holy Spirit in Pentecost. When the Holy Spirit came, they were able to speak in different languages and won a boldness to share the good news.
When the Pentecost Day came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blow of a violent wind came from the sky and fills the whole house where it was sitting. They saw what seemed to be a fire languages that were separated and came to rest in each of them. All of them were full of the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as their spirit allowed them.
(Acts 2: 1-4, NIV)
But what does it mean to be filled with the spirit today? What role does it play in our lives?
As a third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit:
Authorizes
I remember when an atheist asked specific questions and questioned my faith. I prayed silently for the Holy Spirit to authorize me to answer the questions and boldly share my faith.
After praying, the place where they met was shaken. And everyone was full of the Holy Spirit and boldly spoke the word of God. (Acts 4:31, NIV)
Amenities
When you are worried or upset, I will pray for the Holy Spirit to wrap around me like a warm blanket and comfort me in the way it can only.
But consolation, which is the Holy Spirit, which the Father will send to my name, will teach you all things and bring all things to your memory, whatever I have told you. (John 14:26, NIV)
Taught
Reading the Bible can cause confusion at times and then I like to call the Holy Spirit to give me insight and understanding to what I read.
These are the things that God has revealed to us from his spirit. The spirit is looking for all things, even the deep things of God. (1 Corinthians 2:10, NIV)
Condemned
The Holy Spirit will gently push my conscience when I do, saying or thinking of something I should not be. He does not condemn, but condemns us to sin.
But I really tell you, it’s for your good that I’m going away. If I don’t leave, the lawyer will not come to you. But if I go, I’ll send him. When it comes, it will prove the world to be wrong about sin and justice and crisis (John 16: 7-8, NIV)
Helps
There are times when I don’t have the words to pray, but I know I can call the Holy Spirit to help and intervene.
In the same way, the spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what to pray, but the spirit itself interferes with us through the sighs without words. (Romans 8:26, NIV)
Gives
The Holy Spirit gives us gifts. During my prayer and in my writing, the Holy Spirit gave me the gift of prophecy. Through it, I was able to encourage and upload many colleagues.
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift prophesies, then you prophesy according to your faith. (Romans 12: 6, NIV)
The Holy Spirit may be invisible, but its influence is not. Filling with the Holy Spirit is terrible and incredible.
And it’s not at all uncontrollable or scary.
