Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and that means you might be thinking about treating yourself to some special non-toxic beauty products for the big day.

Maybe you’re eyeing that gorgeous red lipstick or picking out a new fragrance that will set hearts aflutter.

But here’s the thing: if you’re someone who cares about what goes into your body, you should think carefully about what products you use, this Valentine’s Day and beyond.

As you know, your skin absorbs a lot of what you put on it. The good news is that you don’t have to stop looking beautiful just to stay healthy. You just need to know what to avoid and which non-toxic beauty products to turn to.

In this post, we give you some tips to help you make the non-toxic exchange this Valentine’s Day and love your skin with safe and effective beauty products.

The toxic problem hidden in pretty packages

The government doesn’t monitor the beauty industry as closely as you might think. Companies can put many different ingredients in their products without first proving that they are safe.

This means that some of your favorite makeup and skincare products may contain chemicals that researchers have linked to health problems such as hormone disruption, allergic reactions, and in some cases, even an increased risk of cancer.

The tricky part is that you’re usually not exposed to huge amounts of these chemicals all at once. It’s more like a slow drip over time. Each product you use may have only a small amount of questionable ingredients. But when you add it all up over months and years, it starts to matter.

That’s why switching to non-toxic beauty products is so important to your long-term health.

At CV Skinlabs, we provide truly safe, nourishing formulas that help you enjoy healthier, more youthful and glowing skin without exposure to irritants or toxic ingredients.

In fact, all of our formulas are toxicologically tested to ensure safety and clinically proven to ensure efficacy. This means no ingredients linked to irritation or harmful health effects, but safe ingredients that deliver transformative results.

Five Toxic Ingredients to Avoid (And What to Use Instead)

Let’s break down some of the biggest troublemakers in beauty products and talk about healthier alternatives that you can feel good about using.

Non-Toxic Beauty Products: Avoid Lead and Heavy Metals in Lipstick

THE The FDA has tested hundreds of lipsticksfor example. They found that all contained at least some lead, with levels ranging up to about 7 parts per million (ppm). A 2007 study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found lead in nearly two-thirds of the lipsticks they tested.

What makes this particularly concerning is that you literally eat small amounts of your lipstick throughout the day, every time you lick your lips, eat or drink something.

Lead isn’t the only heavy metal you need to worry about. Scientists have also found chromium, cadmium, aluminum and manganese in lipstick and lip gloss. These minerals can build up in your body over time and potentially affect your hormones or affect your nervous system.

The worst part? These minerals do not appear on ingredient labels. This means you can’t just look at the back of the tube and know if your lip product is free of heavy metals.

What to use instead:

Your best bet is to choose non-toxic beauty products from brands that specifically test for heavy metals and are transparent about their marketing. Look for companies that use natural mineral pigments and organic ingredients instead of synthetic dyes. And remember, Restorative Skin Balm is the perfect non-toxic product to keep your lips soft, smooth and kissable without toxic ingredients.

Non-Toxic Beauty Products: Choosing Safer Fragrances and Fragrances

Perfume and cologne can be very romantic gifts on Valentine’s Day. But what’s not so romantic is the fact that most of these products are made up of a secret mixture of potentially thousands of chemicals that the companies don’t have to tell you about.

When you see the word “perfume” or “perfume” in an ingredient list—or when you buy a perfume or cologne made entirely of fragrance—you can assume you’re dealing with up to 3,000 different chemical ingredients.

Studies have found some disturbing results about the ingredients hidden in perfumes. Phthalates, for exampleit can affect your hormones and has been linked to reproductive problems. Fragrances can also contain formaldehyde, synthetic musks that can build up in your body fat, and compounds that can cause headaches and dizziness.

What to use instead:

Instead of looking for conventional fragrances, look for non-toxic beauty products that use natural fragrances made with essential oils and plant extracts or brands that fully disclose all their ingredients. Some companies now make beautiful perfumes without phthalates, parabens or synthetic chemicals.

Non-toxic beauty products: Avoid Parabens in moisturizers and makeup

Parabens have been used in beauty products for decades to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. You’ll find them in everything from moisturizers to foundations to shampoos and body lotions. They are usually easy to spot on ingredient lists because they have “paraben” in the name, such as methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben.

Once they enter your body through the skin, they can act like the hormone estrogen. Research has linked parabens to many problems, including increased risk of breast cancer, reproductive problems, and early puberty. Adolescent studies who wore makeup every day found they had 20 times more propylparaben in their urine compared to girls who rarely or never wore makeup. This is a huge difference as it shows how quickly these chemicals can build up in your system.

What to use instead:

Many companies are starting to make non-toxic paraben-free beauty products. Look for moisturizers, foundations, and other products that specifically say “paraben-free” on the label. Natural preservatives like vitamin E, rosemary extract, and grapefruit seed extract can do the job just as well without the health concerns.

All CV Skinlabs products are made without parabens and use natural ingredients that are safe for even the most sensitive skin. Our Calming Moisture and Body Repair Lotion are perfect examples of non-toxic beauty products that keep your skin hydrated and healthy without exposing you to questionable chemicals. Both restore radiance to dull skin from head to toe and induce radiance.

Non-toxic beauty products: Finding safer nail polish options

If you’re planning a manicure for Valentine’s Day, you might want to think twice about the nail polish you choose. Traditional brands can contain what is known as the “toxic trio”: formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP).

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and is also one of the most common causes of allergic skin reactions. Manufacturers use it in nail polish as a hardener and preservative.

Toluene is used as a solvent to help the polishing go on smoothly, but its fumes may cause neurological damage and nausea. It can even affect fetal development if pregnant women are exposed to it regularly.

DBP is a plasticizer that helps prevent spalling, but is classified as endocrine disruptor which can affect your hormones.

Beyond the toxic trio, nail polishes can also contain camphor (which can cause skin irritation in some people), triphenyl phosphate (another hormone disruptor), and various other chemicals that can harm your health over time. This is especially true for nail salon workers who are exposed to these fumes day in and day out, but it’s also something to consider if you paint your nails regularly.

What to use instead:

Look for non-toxic nail polishes that are labeled “5-free” or even better, “7-free” or “10-free.” These numbers refer to how many toxic ingredients the varnish does not contain. At the very least, make sure your nail polish is free of the toxic trio.

Non-toxic beauty products: Chemical sunscreens in tinted products

Even though Valentine’s Day is in the middle of winter, many beauty products released for the season contain sunscreen ingredients. You can think of tinted moisturizers, BB creams, and lip products that often include chemical sunscreens to provide year-round protection.

While protecting your skin from the sun is important, some chemical sunscreen ingredients aren’t really part of a non-toxic beauty approach. Oxybenzone, for example, is a hormone disruptor which can be found in sunscreens, lip balms and lotions. Your body absorbs it quickly through the skin and has been detected in most people’s bodies when tested.

Octinoxate is another common sunscreen ingredient that can irritate the skin and has been linked to hormonal disruption. Other related chemical sunscreens include PABA, benzophenone, and homosalate.

What to use instead:

The healthiest option is to look for products that use mineral sunscreens, especially zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These natural sunscreens sit on top of your skin and reflect UV rays instead of being absorbed into your body like chemical sunscreens.

Happy Valentine’s Day

This Valentine’s Day, you deserve to feel beautiful without compromising your health. Choosing non-toxic ingredients is the best way to protect yourself this special holiday and all year round. Don’t forget to start with the healthiest foundation—healthy skin! Our CV Skinlabs products are the perfect way to do this.
