Why this Arizona Chicano is angry and scared but still proud
My name is Daniel Trujillo. I am a 17 -year -old Trans Chicano from Arizona. I come from a long order of immigrants. My big grandparents, my grandparents and my dad immigrated from Mexico and eventually became naturalized citizens. I am very proud of my heritage and family.
I went out when I was 8 years old, and I was lucky enough to have parents who were incredibly supportive. We have found a stunning community in our small town of Tucson, Arizona, and over the years, the bonds we have created brought us in difficult times. I was able to take care of gender, to attend a school -confirmation that had non -discriminatory protections and had the love and support of my family.
My parents and I argue for youth Trans and their families for almost a decade. Time by year, we have gone to our state Capitol in the hope that we can stop the harmful anti-trans accounts from the passage. The community was always at the heart of all defense efforts.
It is this community, which always reminds me of the sacrifices my parents, the community, the leaders of the moves and the “tran-pators” have made. These sacrifices are the reason I can live authentically.
Three months ago, my family and I decided to leave the US that this was a decision we never wanted or expected to do. One month after our departure, we heard the news that all the care that confirms the sex for teenagers in Arizona had been cut. It is horrible to see our favorite state become an uninhabited place for trans children like me. What is even worse, [President Donald] Trump and its administration are not even interested in Trans People! They just want to use us as political pawns to stay in power and make money.
I feel angry! Trump, his administration and the far -right lobby have taken so much of us. They have forced those of us who can move, abandon our homes and families, hoping to find a safer home where we can continue to take the care that confirms the gender we need. I feel angry because I am worried and scared about my friends who are back home and are not sure where they can have access to the care stolen from them! Take care that we know saves lives.
Our government is constantly attacking us. And even though we have left the country, we are still feeling the impact of these attacks. It is a constant reminder that this is a global effort to delete trans people and we have to treat it as such. We need to organize and protect each other regardless of the border! People trans exist everywhere and we deserve to live freely.
I would like to see CIS, straight and white allies. This is not politics as usual, and even though I am very angry about all this – I am forever grateful and proud of who I am! Proud to be a trans/queer chicano! We will continue to fight for a better tomorrow.
In solidarity,
Daniel Trujillo, Arizona (he/he)
