It’s that time of year when the immune system is in overdrive from the holidays, we don’t get enough sun, and bugs and viruses seem to be a constant threat. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to get sick. That’s why I started adding one immune booster shot in my everyday life. It’s full of vitamin C, has anti-inflammatory properties and powerful antioxidant properties, and I’ve figured out how to make it the easiest way, without the need for a juicer. This flu season, boost immunity and improve your overall health by supporting your body with this immunity shot recipe.

I started juicing about 5-6 years ago when my mother handed over her juicer. I immediately knew it was a hit for me because soon after I started juicing carrots, cucumbers, apples and lemons, my body started craving more and more juice. A very noticeable benefit of the juice was that it significantly reduced my sweet tooth. Fast forward to now and I’ve branched out a bit and started playing with more ingredients like parsley, beets, turmeric and ginger. Although this recipe does not require a juicer, we highly recommend that you look for one and reap all the benefits that come from juicing.

The other day my daughters and I were wandering around Target (you know your kids are bored on Christmas break when they want to go to Target for fun) and my older daughter asked if she could get a shot. Target has a wide variety of small 2 oz. “Shots” in the production section are all marked for a specific “boost”. All 3 of us got an immunity shot and we all agree that we felt better afterwards. I decided to go to my juicer and make our own since they were $4 a pop! When I made a recipe, I realized that you could make a very effective defense defense very easily without a juicer or even a high-speed blender. I wanted to explore this further and I’m sharing with you how to make your own photo at a fraction of the cost of buying one.

Health Benefits of Ginger:

Ginger is best known for its effect on digestive health, but it has been studied and tested for many other benefits. Fresh ginger root can help balance blood sugar levelsis an excellent source of antioxidants that help strengthen the immune system, it can provide relief from nauseaimproving gut health, reduce body weight and it can help lower blood pressure. Ginger also has strong antibacterial properties and can be useful when fight infections.

Health Benefits of Turmeric:

Turmeric root is widely used in India not only in cooking but also for its health benefits. Turmeric’s most well-known benefit is its ability to calm and reduce chronic inflammation. Its ability to fight free radicals in the body can be very beneficial when working for a healthy immune system. Turmeric can also lead to increased heart health. Turmeric can play a beneficial role role in antiaging which makes sense when you consider its ability to reduce inflammation which is one of the main causes of aging.

The main compound in turmeric is cucurmin. Absorption of curcumin by the body is poor, so it is a good idea to add a pinch of black pepper to any turmeric consumption to enhance absorption.

Making an Immunity Shot with a Juicer or Blender:

First, you need to choose your base liquid. My two recommendations are orange juice or pineapple juice. You need to make sure you get the purest form of the two meaning no plugins. Since both oranges and pineapples have fairly thick skins, organic is preferred but not necessary. You can also consider grapefruit juice or even pear juice. Just be sure to find the highest quality with no added SUGAR! This is the key.

Once you’ve chosen the base for your shoot, it’s time to prepare the 3 powerhouse ingredients that will do all the work. These 3 ingredients are ginger, turmeric and lemon. Ginger is now commonly found in frozen form. I have found ginger cubes at both Target and Trader Joe’s. I have opted for turmeric powder when not using a juicer. Make sure it’s organic. Fresh turmeric will need a juicer or high powered blender and then a fine mesh strainer. Lemons can easily be squeezed with a hand held lemon juicer and give a BIG Vitamin C BOOST to your shot. All three of these ingredients can easily be found at your local grocery store.

Optional Ingredients and Substitutes:

Instead of orange juice, feel free to use any fruit juice you prefer. Pineapple is a great choice as is apple juice. Just make sure there is no added sugar in your juice!!

I will warn you, turmeric is a special flavor and that is putting it lightly. The first time you make them, if you want to try this shot, maybe reduce the amount of turmeric you use. Since it’s a shot, just shoot it and deal with the taste is my advice. My husband didn’t agree, lol.

I add coconut water to reduce the sugar content. It is also excellent at hydrating the body. Check out my homemade electrolyte drink recipe.

Other optional component immunity vaccines are a pinch of cayenne pepper or regularly pepper. You can also add a dash of cinnamon. Believe it or not, fresh garlic is a great supplement for boosting immunity. Raw honey it can also be added for therapeutic benefits. If you are making larger batches of liquid for freezing, I suggest adding 1/2 coconut water to 1/2 juice to reduce sugar content.

What you’ll need to get immunity shots:

  • 1 cup orange juice (about 2 oranges)
  • 1/2 cup Coconut Water
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
  • 20 *Cubes of frozen ginger (each cube is a teaspoon)
  • 3 tsp. Organic turmeric powder
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Glass containers 2 oz
  • Vase or Pyrex measuring cup with spout

*Ginger cubes are found in the frozen section of Target and Trader Joe’s. I guess they can be found in most grocery stores.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of SUGAR-FREE orange juice (about 2 oranges)
  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
  • 20 ginger cubes (each cube is a teaspoon)
  • 3 tsp. turmeric powder
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

Instructions

    1. Pour all ingredients into a 4-cup Pyrex jar or measuring cup.
    2. Mix well with a spoon.
    3. Pour into ice packs, bottles or shot glasses.
    4. Remember to give each shot a good shake before drinking. The ingredients will settle to the bottom.

Notes

  • You can find frozen ginger cubes in the freezer section of most grocery stores.
  • This recipe makes 8 2oz. shootings.
  • I recommend making immune booster shots in bulk, freezing them in glass containers with lids or even ice cubes. That way it’s a grab situation and a much better chance of being consistent.
  • Drink them within 5-7 days. The longer you wait, the less effective they will be.
  • Drink daily for best results.

I recommend making immune booster shots in bulk, freezing them in glass containers with lids or even ice packs. That way it’s a grab situation and a much better chance of being consistent. This recipe is for a large batch, but I’ll also add a recipe for one shot since fresh is always best. I also include a recipe if you have a juicer or high-powered blender and prefer to use that.

Immunity Shot Recipe with Juicer or Blender:

  • 2 lemons peeled
  • 2 peeled oranges
  • 4 thumb sized pieces of turmeric
  • 4 thumb-sized pieces of ginger
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • pinch of black pepper

*If using a blender, make sure it is high powered. Add all the ingredients to the blender, blend well, then pass through a cheesecloth or sieve.

Like I said before, I LOVE my juicer and my juicer has been a game changer for my health and daily lifestyle. i have it Nama J2 cold press juicer. This way of making it saves a lot of time, as you can load all your fruits and vegetables into one container instead of adding them slowly and individually. It is expensive but the quality of the machine as well as the quality of the juice is top notch. I have had mine for almost 5 years with no problems and juice almost daily.

Recipe 1 Serving Immunity Shot:

  • 1 apple
  • 2 lemons peeled
  • 2 inch piece of ginger
  • 2 inch piece of turmeric
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne, beaten into juice

Immunity Shot storage options:

I personally make a batch, fill my bottles and store them in the fridge since I have enough people in my house to drink them and they have no chance of going bad. If you prefer to freeze your downloads, you can do that too. Pouring your batch into iceboxes is an easy way to do this.

Two ice cubes equal 1 ounce and a standard shot is 1.5 ounces. so 3 dice would equal 1 shot. You could also store your shots in glass bottles and freeze them if you’re on the go. Just grab a bottle on your way out the door and drink it as soon as it thaws. This would be a great addition to a healthy meal at home!

Getting immunization shots is a great way to increase your chances of not getting sick this winter season. This immune booster recipe is the easiest way you can make these powerful drinks at home without spending a lot of money buying them at the store. While these shots aren’t the tastiest drink, they are incredibly healthy and beneficial to your overall health!

xx, Jenny
