A new study of functional skills in the US labor market reveals a workforce both vulnerable and durable, with a vast majority of workers reporting multiple restrictions, even when they perform their duties, according to researchers in the researchers Harvard Medical School.

Nicole maestashead of medical school Health DepartmentHe said the findings reflect the alarming trends at national level.

“The previous research finds that people in the middle life are less healthy than people who are older now were in the middle life,” said Maestas, Professor of Finance and Health Care Policy John D. Macarthur. “And it is still true that younger ones are less healthy than middle life people when they were younger.”

The studypublished in June in the processes of the National Academy of Sciences, he used a tool developed in the Netherlands to evaluate disability claims. The Dutch tool counts 97 work -related operational capabilities, providing a much more granular image of US workers by the US government’s disability, which is considering six sectors.

“We haven’t seen a detailed portrait like that of the American workforce,” Maestas said. “It’s not that we measure it better. It’s that we count it for the first time.”

The study of 3,396 adult workers aged 22 and over found that three -quarters faced at least one operational restriction. He also said that US workers on average more than five operating restrictions each. The most widespread restrictions are resistance to the upper body and range of movement of his torso. Also the usual are the restrictions associated with the sensitivity to the environment of the environment – for example, for example – and knee function. Other restrictions include problems associated with the immune system, head and neck movements, emotional regulation and knowledge.

The researchers have also asked employees on underlying medical issues. The conditions that cause the greatest number of functional restrictions are mental illnesses, joints such as arthritis, substance use disorder and asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The data was collected in 2019. The National Institute for the Aging grant supported by the project was canceled, but Maestas said the researchers managed to collect additional data at the beginning of the year for a surveillance study that hopes to detect goals for intervention.

While the employment of people with operational restrictions is the success of the US labor market, the new document underlines the vulnerability of the workforce and, by extension, the national economy, Maestas said. The highest levels of operational restrictions were observed in jobs involving continuous physical work, as well as clergy, services and sales positions. Many of these roles are essential. UPSHOT is a less -equipped workforce for the effect of a pandemic or other major disorder.

“The fact that so many people with functional restrictions work is successful,” Maestas said. “He also reveals vulnerability when you think about the country’s broader economic performance, the backdrop of this study is the fact that the US population is getting older in his fastest clip, I knew this is coming, but you have more people who are withdrawn than they come to the workforce.
