Moisturizing is an essential part of any good skin care routine. Whether you have skin drier than the Sahara or oilier than french fries, keeping your skin hydrated should be part of your routine. Recently, a collagen face mask blew up on TikTok. And one of the things that makes it so popular is its anti-aging marketing claims. As well as how people’s skin looks after using it. There are even videos of dermatologists showing the numerical difference in the hydration of their skin before and after using the mask. And the results show that the mask is extremely moisturizing.

This might lead one to question, are the best antiaging skin care products moisturizers? From the results, it makes perfect sense to see why one would think this mask is a Holy Grail anti-aging product. And you wonder if they should be looking for more of these super moisturizing products. So, let’s get some answers to these questions based on skin science.

What happens when our skin ages?

Before we talk about hydration, let’s talk about what happens to our skin as we age.

Our skin ages due to internal factors such as genetics and natural biological processes slowing down. Our skin barrier becomes more porous, natural oil production slows down and we lose volume in our skin. The increased porosity of our skin barrier means that our skin naturally loses moisture (transepidermal water loss, TEWL). And as if that’s not enough of a problem to deal with, the reduction in oil production means our skin’s natural method of locking in moisture also decreases. Finally, volume loss is caused by important structural proteins such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid breaking down faster than your body can replace them.

Apart from all these, there are external factors that contribute to aging. Some of the most common external factors are UV exposure, pollution and lifestyle habits. UV rays can damage your skin cells and break down your important proteins. Additionally, UV rays and pollution can cause oxidative stress, leading to further damage to your skin.

Over time, these all contribute to visible signs of aging, from wrinkles and fine lines to dehydration and loss of elasticity. While your skincare routine can’t change internal factors, it can help reduce their impact on your appearance and combat how quickly external factors age you.

So why is it important to keep your skin hydrated for aging skin?

Since you can’t stop your skin from getting drier, you can focus on replenishing the moisture your skin is losing. This dryness can make fine lines and wrinkles that come from the natural loss of essential proteins more visible. Additionally, if your skin is repeatedly dried out over time, this can deepen fine lines and wrinkles. Moisturizers, such as those containing water, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides, help maintain moisture levels, making skin look firmer and minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. This is why hydration is often marketed as a key anti-aging benefit. Super moisturizers can provide an instant dopamine hit to someone looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

However, this effect is only temporary. This temporary effect is what people using the viral collagen mask on TikTok are seeing. Unfortunately, while hydration can temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it doesn’t directly address the underlying causes of skin aging, such as collagen breakdown and slower cell turnover.

So what are the best ingredients for an anti-aging skin care routine?

So the answer to the first question is no, moisturizers are not the best products for antiaging skin care. While they can contribute to a well-rounded skincare routine, truly effective antiaging products go beyond hydration. Ingredients like retinol, peptides, vitamin C, and AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) are better options to fight the signs of aging. These ingredients are great to look for in an antiaging product because they stimulate collagen production, increase cell turnover, and protect the skin from environmental damage. These ingredients work to repair and regenerate the skin, targeting the structural problems that lead to wrinkles, sagging and age spots.

Related post: Should you use peptides or retinol?

For example:

  • Retinol stimulates collagen production and accelerates cell turnover, reducing fine lines and improving skin texture.
  • Peptides they help to restore the skin barrier and support the production of collagen and elastin.
  • Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, protecting the skin from oxidative stress while brightening and evening out skin tone.

While hydration plumps and smooths skin, these active ingredients work at a deeper level to reverse the signs of aging.

So what’s the final verdict on which moisturizers are the best antiaging skin care products?

The beauty industry often markets hydration as a complete anti-aging solution. Unfortunately, terms like “moisture locking”, “plumping” and “hydrating” are used to sell products, sometimes creating the illusion that these are all you need for youthful skin. While hydration improves the overall appearance of the skin, it’s important not to fall into the trap of thinking that moisturizers are the best products for antiaging skin care. Because they are not a stand-alone solution for long-term antiaging effects.

While hydration is a necessary part of maintaining youthful skin, the best antiaging products do much more than just moisturize. Active ingredients such as retinol, peptides and antioxidants work to fight the deeper signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles and loss of firmness. To truly prevent and reverse aging, your skin care routine should include a combination of moisturizers and active ingredients that target multiple aspects of skin health. So don’t be fooled into thinking that hydration alone is enough to keep your skin looking young—there’s a lot more to effective antiaging care.
