Hybrid training has quickly become one of the hottest fitness trends, offering a host of real benefits, a healthy dose of innovation and some serious fun.

Blurring the lines between training styles, Hybrid education aims to offer the best of all worldssuch as greater strength, better fitness, improved overall health and resistance to injury through improved mobility and movement efficiency.

The hybrid athlete

Beyond the natural benefits, Alternating gym specialization with a more general approach means you keep your training varied and interestingempowering active individuals to train their way and tackle any physical challenge when the desire or opportunity arises.

As more and more people tire of training in the same gym environment day in and day out, with little variety in their exercise selection and training structure, many are choosing to augment those weight sessions with outdoor activities or sports codes that add a fun dimension or skill mastery.

The hectic pace of modern life also leaves little time to get to the gym each day, even for the most dedicated gym members.

The ability to throw on a pair of running shoes or hit the indoor gym for a group Zwift bike ride means you’ll complete your daily session no matter what life throws at you.

By combining fitness activities, you also develop a unique combination of skills, abilities and physical attributes that allow you to perform at a high level in a variety of sports and activities.

It is also a great way to avoid overtraining and burnout making it harder to plateau in your progress as diversity constantly trains different systems and muscles.

Definition of hybrid training

In this context, Hybrid education is defined as any combination of multiple modes of education – no need to run and lift.

Common hybrid training combinations include:

  • Strength and Cardio: Combining weight lifting or bodyweight exercises with cardiovascular activities such as running, cycling or swimming.
  • Strength and Flexibility: Incorporate stretching or yoga into your strength training routine to improve mobility and reduce muscle soreness.
  • Functional fitness: It combines exercises that mimic everyday movements with strength training and cardio to improve overall functional fitness.
  • Structured training and unstructured play: Those who combine structured weight lifting and cardio during the week also want to incorporate unstructured play, participate in other fun and trendy activities such as weekly Padel or pickleball games, or go outdoors for weeks of hiking or poking (hiking with a heavy backpack ).

While professional athletes in sporting codes such as rugby, football and athletics have always combined training methods to develop the right balance between strength and fitness, Mainstream exercise trends like CrossFit and HYROX have popularized a more varied approach to training among the average fitness enthusiast.

Hybrid fuel training

Hybrid athletes train with a combination of volume and intensity, requiring a balanced, nutrient-dense diet that provides enough energy from carbohydrates to fuel their efforts, with natural fats to support hormone production and protein to enhance muscle recovery and rehabilitation.

Supplements can support hybrid athletes by ensuring they have the right amount of energy to train hard in various disciplines or sustain efforts during cardio workouts or endurance events.

Therefore, Hybrid athletes typically combine products from the bodybuilding and power sports categories with products designed to support endurance athletes.

  • Before training: A pre-workout containing amino acids with some form of rapidly digestible carbohydrate. These products provide energy from carbohydrates to fuel efforts and amino acids to limit muscle damage and support recovery.
  • During training or competition: A product that offers a blend of simple carbohydrates for a quick energy source with electrolytes to support hydration during hard or prolonged training efforts or races.
  • After training or competition: Support muscle recovery and replenish depleted energy stores with a post-workout product that combines protein and carbohydrates.
  • Between sessions: Supporting the muscle building process, an anabolic support supplement to boost natural testosterone production while limiting the impact of excess cortisol. Creatine is another beneficial product for hybrid athletes as it supports power output to improve performance. As hybrid athletes typically carry more muscle than the average endurance athlete, additional joint support is required, especially for those athletes who do a lot of running.

Time to go hybrid

Finally, Hybrid training offers a comprehensive approach to strength and fitness that can help you achieve your goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle while adding variety and an element of fun.

Whether you’re training for a HYROX competition or just want to take your fitness to the next level, combining different training methods to suit your personal preferences can create a personalized routine that challenges your body, keeps your mind engaged and increases your your motivation levels to keep you active every day.
