So many people who embark on a skincare journey begin by trying to fight their acne. And one of the most persistent skin care challenges that comes with acne is hyperpigmentation, an uneven skin tone. Navigating through all the products designed to correct dark spots, each claiming to be the golden solution can be overwhelming.

And frankly it can lead to a lot of disappointment with products being over promised and not delivered. The polish category is not exempt from marketing hype which can sometimes leave you disappointed and feeling like you wasted your money. So I’ve spent the last couple of months learning more about brightening ingredients and trying out various brightening serums.

Today, I’m breaking down Burt’s Bees Brightening Dark Spot Corrector.

What’s Up with the Burt’s Bees Brightening Serum

The Burt’s Bees Brightening Dark Spot Corrector, a serum made with almost 99% natural ingredients. They proudly market it as free of parabens, phthalates, SLS or petrolatum. This serum is for people who prioritize natural and herbal skin care products.

Free from lists are all the rage in the skincare space today. However, there is no scientific basis for staying away from certain ingredients. But there are many consumers looking for natural skincare alternatives and this product definitely fits into that category. The collection of almost 99% natural ingredients makes this product particularly appealing to those who lean towards a more organic skin care routine.

Additionally, the inclusion of bakuchiol, touted as a plant-based retinol alternative, adds an interesting layer to its formulation. However, it is important to note that the scientific evidence supporting this claim is currently limited.

Breaking the bottle

This dark spot corrector is a blackened gold liquid housed in a glass bottle with a user-friendly dropper. I really liked this dropper as an alternative to the standard dropper.

The absence of a squeeze bottle, replaced by a convenient button-activated dropper, adds a touch of novelty to the packaging. I liked that it was easier to formulate the product and get a consistent amount of product each time.

The bottle holds 1 oz. The emulsion-like texture has a spicy natural aroma.

Decoding the natural ingredients of Burt’s Bees Dark Spot Corrector

Part of the reason brightness is so complicated is that it requires you to deal with many issues at once, and it takes time. You want to prevent any new pigmentation from forming while also helping to speed up the formation of new layers of skin to get rid of any pigmentation that is already embedded in your skin. A great dark spot corrector will have ingredients that address both of these issues.

Ingredient Deep Dive: What’s in Burt’s Bees Dark Spot Corrector?

Burt’s Bees Dark Spot Corrector contains exfoliating ingredients and antioxidants. It also incorporates a popular herbal ingredient marketed as a retinol-like alternative.

Peeling:

  • Citric acid: It is a mild acid that has some exfoliating properties. Exfoliation gets rid of the outer layer of skin and reveals a new fresh layer of skin. Pigmentation is incorporated into the layers of the skin and then, as new layers are formed, it is pushed to the outer layers. So incorporating a gentle exfoliant can help promote skin renewal and contribute to a smoother complexion.

Cell Reversal Booster:

  • Bakuchiol: Touted as a plant-based retinol alternative, bakuchiol offers antioxidant properties. While the scientific evidence for its cell cycle enhancement is unclear, it does add an interesting element to the serum. Bakuchiol has antioxidant properties that are an important function in preventing the formation of new pigmentation.

Antioxidants and Prevention of Melanin Formation:

Antioxidant:

  • Vitamin E (tocopherol): One of the most popular antioxidants, vitamin E provides protection against free radicals that can damage the skin and cause hyperpigmentation.

Other ingredients

Hydration:

  • Water: The foundation of any skincare product, water provides essential hydration to the skin, ensuring a balanced and hydrated complexion.

Moisturizing:

  • Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil: This natural oil helps to hydrate the skin, helping to retain water without feeling greasy.

Hydration Boosters:

  • Glycerin: The most common humectant, glycerin attracts and holds water and is small enough to travel through the skin barrier and hydrate the lower layers of the skin.
  • Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract (Brown Algae Extract): Another humectant that has the ability to retain water. Algae is a larger molecule than glycerin and thus holds water on the surface of the skin.
  • Lauryl Glucoside and Myristyl Glucoside: Surfactants designed to aid hydration, promoting an even and smooth application of the serum.

Fragrance:

  • Eugenol: Producing a spicy aroma, eugenol comes from plants such as cinnamon, basil and cloves.
  • Geraniol: It is extracted from geranium.
  • Lemon: A lemony scent of citrus peels.
  • Linalool: Lavender and coriander extract.

Preservatives Packaging:

  • Phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate: This trio acts as preservatives, ensuring the longevity and stability of the serum. It’s really great to see a preservative pack on this natural skin care product because often brands leave them out, which can actually make the product more harmful to consumers.

Emulsifier:

  • Polyglyceryl-6 Laurel: A critical emulsifier that helps blend oils and water-based ingredients while maintaining a harmonious composition.

Texture Modifier:

  • Xanthan Gum, Gellan Gum: These modifiers enhance the texture of the serum, ensuring a smooth and easy application.

My experience with the product

When I was testing the dark spot corrector, I incorporated the serum into my morning routine. Vitamin C serums are great to use in the morning with your sunscreen to give you an extra layer of protection. It dried quickly and didn’t leave a sticky finish, which I appreciated. The quick drying made it very easy to apply my sunscreen afterwards with no build up or patchiness.

Related Post: Why Is Sunscreen Important?

The product is very scented, however I don’t usually have issues with fragrance so I had no sensitivity or irritation. The unique spicy scent may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for me, it was a pleasant addition.

Related post: Fragrance Sensitivity: Is Fragrance Bad for the Skin?

Addressing the primary goal of luminosity, my four-week trial revealed noticeable improvements in skin tone. However, it’s important to manage expectations – the serum didn’t outperform retinol or other vitamin C serums I’ve used.

And when you look at typical skin turnover time, your skin completely turns over about every 4 weeks, so that might mean the serum did a good job of prevention, but didn’t necessarily speed up the renewal process.

Since the serum effectively prevented any new pigmentation from forming, it earned a spot in my on-the-go skincare essentials.

When I checked the brand’s website for any clinical data, most of the product’s claims were based on ingredients, and the brand has not conducted clinical studies to validate the product’s effectiveness.

Investing in Radiance: Evaluating the Value of Burt’s Bees Dark Spot Corrector

Value for investment: At $20 for 1 ounce, Burt’s Bees Dark Spot Corrector aligns with the market standard for brightening vitamin C serums. If you’re looking for modest improvements in skin tone while preventing re-pigmentation, this product offers a reasonable value proposition.

The Fragrance Factor: Navigating the Cons of Burt’s Bees Dark Spot Corrector

The one potential downside to this product is the fragrance. A heavily scented formula can be a challenge for those who are sensitive to scents. If you sometimes have challenges with scented products but still want to try this dark spot corrector, consider giving it a try first. Remember, natural fragrances do not exempt you from potential sensitivities.

Orchestrate Burt’s Bees Dark Spot Corrector into your skincare routine

For those looking to add this serum to their routine, it is readily available at major drugstores like Walgreens or CVS, on Amazon, and directly through the Burt’s Bees website.

Final verdict?

In summary, Burt’s Bees Brightening Dark Spot Corrector is an okay choice for those who lean towards natural skin care and are looking for a dark spot corrector.

It’s not going to beat a brightening formula with retinol, exfoliator, and antioxidants, but it could be a helpful addition to prevent new pigmentation.

Consider a patch test if fragrance sensitivity is a concern. For those who can tolerate a retinol that is probably a better choice.

In the end, choose based on your unique skincare needs and let your skin glow with confidence!
