Is it safe for your baby to wear jewelry?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises against jewelry for infants. But does that mean you can’t take a cute photo with your child’s new name bracelet? The AAP’s recommendation for infants comes from the risk of choking and suffocation.

If your infant or toddler puts jewelry in their mouth, the small pieces are a serious health hazard. Don’t assume that just because a clasp holds an item tightly around your baby’s wrist or ankle that it won’t come off. An accident with a chain or clasp could leave a bracelet (or other similar item) dangling.

Twice the babies means twice the gifts! Here are the best baby gift ideas for parents expecting twins.

This means that it is absolutely necessary to supervise your baby at all times when wearing a name bracelet or other similar jewelry.

Wearing the item for a few minutes while standing nearby and taking pictures can help minimize safety risks. Be sure to remove the piece immediately after the image session is complete. Never leave jewelry on your baby when they are sleeping, playing, sitting in their car seat, or anywhere else for that matter.

Along with the choking hazard, information from the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital warns parents to avoid jewelry containing lead and items that have magnetic parts. While older paints and water pipes are top sources of lead, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that some jewelry may contain this potentially harmful substance. Lead exposure can cause health concerns ranging from seizures to developmental and learning delays. Always check the makeup of any jewelry you put on your child. If you are concerned about a bracelet or other similar piece, talk to your child’s pediatrician.
