I am very partial to glycerin and add this miracle ingredient to every skincare product EpiLynx makes!

Here’s why I love it so much:

Behind water and fragrance, glycerin is one of the most frequently mentioned ingredients in cosmetics. It is also an important ingredient in moisturizers and lotions. Using glycerin in its pure form is growing in popularity, but there are things consumers should be aware of if they choose to do so.

Studies show that glycerin can positively affect your skin in several ways. Keep reading to find out how.

What is glycerin?

Glycerin, also known as glycerine, is a natural compound derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. It is a clear, colorless, odorless and syrupy liquid with a sweet taste.

Glycerin is a moisturizera type of humectant that draws water to the outer layer of your skin from the deeper layers of your skin and the air.

In skin care products, glycerin is commonly used with occlusives, another type of humectant, to trap the moisture it draws into the skin.

According to a 2016 studyGlycerin is “the most effective humectant” available for increasing hydration in the top layer of your skin, compared to many others including:

Can glycerin irritate my skin?

As a humectant, glycerin draws water from the nearest source. Especially in low humidity conditions, the closest source of water is the lowest levels of your skin. This can dehydrate the skin, even to the point of blistering.

Because blisters can occur with undissolved glycerin or glycerin that isn’t diluted enough, it’s a good idea to use products that have glycerin as an ingredient instead of using pure glycerin.

Many supporters of natural cosmetics recommend diluting the glycerin with rose water, as rose water is believed to hydrate the skin and refine pores. ONE 2019 study found that rose had positive antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin.

In addition, a 2017 study found that a combination of glycerin, hyaluronic acid and Centella asiatica The extract improves skin barrier function for up to 24 hours after application. (see all skin care products that contain all 3: glycerin, hyaluronic acid and Centella asiatica – EpiLynx skincare)

Are there any side effects from using glycerin?

Although there don’t seem to be many reported side effects, glycerin is a natural product, so there’s always a chance for allergic reaction.

If you experience redness, itching or a rash, stop using the product immediately. Look for an alternative product that does not contain glycerin and be sure to read labels carefully.

How to use glycerin on the face.

  • First, wash your face with cold water.
  • Put glycerin on a cotton ball or tissue and gently wipe your face.
  • Allow the glycerin to absorb into your skin for a few minutes.
  • Gently rinse the glycerin with water.

The best glycerin for skin

When browsing the Internet or the aisles, you may be overwhelmed by the number of glycerin products to choose from. While some brands may seem more trendy than others, it’s important to get the kind that reacts best to your specific skin type. Note that it may not be one of the popular brands.

When choosing the best glycerin for your skin, consider talking to a dermatologist first to learn more about your specific skin type and which product would be best.

An option is also available glycerin soapwhich is generally recommended for people with sensitive skin.

Conclusion:

Research shows that glycerin in your moisturizers or soap can have a positive effect on your skin.

The skin on your face tends to be thinner. In some conditions, glycerin can dehydrate the skin, and undissolved glycerin can cause blisters in some cases. It is safer to consider using a glycerin-rich product rather than diluting its pure form.

If after applying a glycerin product to your skin, you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, such as itching or redness, stop using the product immediately and talk to a healthcare professional.

All of our EpiLynx products contain high quality diluted vegetable glycerin:
